Medical Waste Management in Turkey: 2014 Data Released

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has shared the medical waste statistics for the year 2014 with the public. According to the published data, the total amount of medical waste collected across the country was recorded as 74.5 thousand tons. These data reveal the general situation regarding the management of waste originating from healthcare institutions.

According to the information in the report, a large portion of the collected medical waste was processed in a way that would not harm the environment or human health. 68 percent of this separately collected waste was disposed of in controlled landfill sites. This method is considered an important step in preventing waste from mixing with nature.

The regular collection and disposal of medical waste is of critical importance for the protection of public health, especially in areas where hospitals and health centers are located. Controlled landfill sites ensure that waste is stored safely and that environmental pollution is minimized.

Waste management processes in Turkey continue to develop as part of environmental policies. These data shared by TÜİK serve as a fundamental resource for understanding the success of waste management practices in past years and for determining future environmental strategies.
