Medical Waste Management in Turkey: 2014 Data Released
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has shared the medical waste statistics for the year 2014 with the public. According to the published data, the total amount of medical waste collected across the country was recorded as 74.5 thousand tons.
It is of great importance that this waste generated by healthcare facilities is collected using special methods to ensure it does not harm the environment. According to TurkStat data, a large portion of this separately collected waste was sent to sanitary landfill sites.
According to the statistics, 68 percent of the collected medical waste was disposed of in controlled and sanitary landfill areas. This method contributes to the protection of environmental health by preventing the waste from mixing with nature.
Waste management is among the important efforts carried out in Turkey to protect both public health and prevent environmental pollution. Authorities emphasize that the safe disposal of medical waste is critical for a sustainable future.
