Medical Waste Management in Turkey: 2014 Data Released

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has shared the medical waste statistics for the year 2014 with the public. According to the published data, the total amount of medical waste collected across the country was recorded as 74.5 thousand tons.

Important details regarding the management of collected waste stand out. According to the data, a significant portion of the separately collected medical waste, 68 percent, was disposed of in controlled landfill sites to protect environmental health.

Medical waste consists of special types of waste generated by hospitals and healthcare facilities that carry a risk of infection. Managing this waste correctly is of critical importance both to prevent environmental pollution and to protect public health.

The 2014 data provides an important indicator regarding Turkey's infrastructure efforts in medical waste management. Experts state that the disposal of such waste in sanitary landfills is necessary to keep harmful substances that could mix into nature under control.
