Energy Line Tension in the Eastern Mediterranean: Reaction from Turkey
A new electricity line project planned in the Eastern Mediterranean has caused diplomatic controversy among the countries in the region. The project, which is planned to be implemented by Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration, has the potential to affect energy balances in the region.
In the first phase of the project, it is aimed to lay an 898-kilometer electricity line. This line is intended to transport energy resources in the region to Europe. However, the scope of the project is not limited to this.
In the later stages of the plan, it is envisaged that the line will be extended to Israel with an additional 1,200-kilometer cable. This means that the project will turn into a strategic energy corridor covering not only the region but a wider geography.
Turkey has expressed its official reaction to this project. Ankara emphasizes that its rights over maritime jurisdiction areas and energy resources in the region should not be ignored. Turkey argues that steps taken in the region without its approval are not in accordance with international law.
Energy experts warn that such projects could lead to more tension rather than cooperation among the countries in the region. Diplomatic talks between the parties in the coming days are expected to determine the future of the project.
