TRNC President Ersin Tatar Reacts to the European Union
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ersin Tatar reacted strongly to the European Commission President's failure to acknowledge Turkish Cypriots in a recent speech regarding Cyprus. Tatar stated that this stance ignores the realities on the island.
President Tatar noted that European Union officials have adopted a biased stance on the Cyprus issue. The statement emphasized that the constant disregard in international platforms for the reality that there are two separate peoples and two separate states in Cyprus is unacceptable.
The TRNC administration argues that the European Union should be a fair mediator in the resolution processes on the island. Tatar expressed that they are determined to protect the rights of Turkish Cypriots and that this approach by the European Union does not contribute to the peace process.
This development has brought the diplomatic discussions regarding relations between Turkey and the European Union and the resolution of the Cyprus issue back to the agenda. TRNC authorities reiterated that they expect a more balanced approach from the international community that recognizes the existence of Turkish Cypriots.
