Medical Waste Management in Turkey: 2014 Data Released
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has shared the 2014 medical waste data with the public. According to the published report, the total amount of medical waste collected across the country was recorded at 74.5 thousand tons. These data serve as an important indicator regarding the management of waste generated by healthcare facilities.
The processing of collected waste is of great importance in terms of environmental health. According to TurkStat data, 68 percent of separately collected medical waste was disposed of in sanitary landfills. This method ensures that waste is controlled without causing harm to the environment or human health.
Sanitary landfilling refers to the storage of waste on impermeable surfaces in accordance with specific standards. This process plays a critical role in preventing hazardous waste, particularly from hospitals and health centers, from mixing with nature.
The management of medical waste in Turkey is part of the efforts carried out to prevent environmental pollution and protect public health. These 2014 data once again highlight the importance of infrastructure projects and inspections regarding waste management.
