Why is the discussion about Islamization distorting reality?

Islamic extremism must be fought by all available means within the framework of the rule of law. However, experts warn that casting suspicion on all Muslims is not only unjust but also dangerous. While the coalition agreement between CDU/CSU and SPD pledges to "combat Islamism," public discourse often conflates Islam as a religion with extremist ideologies. The result is fear and division that fuel both Islamophobia and extremism simultaneously.

The concept of "Islamization" has become a populist slogan, fueled by books, slogans, and far-right rhetoric. However, scientific studies reveal a completely different picture. Research from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and the religious monitor of the Bertelsmann Foundation shows that the vast majority of Muslims in Germany are connected to the democratic system and live peacefully. Only a small minority sympathizes with extremist ideologies, which should not be confused with the daily lives of Muslims.

Extremist movements, especially jihadist ones, pose a real threat indeed. However, they have increasingly relied on the internet, where radical advocates and influencers spread their propaganda. They exploit discrimination and hostility towards Muslims to attract vulnerable youth through promises of belonging and superiority. This highlights the urgent need to distinguish between Islamism, as a violent political ideology, and Islam as a religion practiced peacefully by millions of citizens. The failure to make this distinction threatens to marginalize communities and strengthens extremist narratives.

At the same time, discrimination remains a daily reality for many Muslims in Germany. Women who wear hijabs often face the harshest forms of treatment, from insults to discrimination in the workplace. Labeling Islamic practices such as wearing the hijab or religious customs as 'symbols of extremism' not only harms individuals but also reinforces the propaganda of Islamists who claim that the West is anti-Islam. Experts emphasize that protecting religious freedom, especially for minorities, is a fundamental pillar of the rule of law and should not be compromised under majority pressure.

The challenge facing Germany is twofold: effectively combating Islamist extremism while simultaneously safeguarding the rights and dignity of its Muslim citizens. Exaggerations, generalizations, and fear-based policies only deepen divisions and empower both Islamist extremists and the far-right AfD party. True security lies in precisely targeted legal measures against extremism, coupled with fairness, empathy, and equal participation of Muslims in society. Any other approach threatens to undermine democracy itself.
