Pensionable service in Ukraine: what you need to know about the Soviet period

In Ukraine, the process of reviewing pension calculation rules is ongoing. Many citizens are interested in whether all service time earned during the Soviet era will be counted when they retire. The Pension Fund of Ukraine emphasizes that there are certain legislative restrictions and exceptions that affect the amount of future payments.

The main requirement for counting service time is the availability of official documents confirming employment. Such documents include a labor record book, certificates from the workplace, or archival extracts. If the entries in the documents contain errors, corrections, or are not stamped, the Pension Fund may refuse to include this period in the insurance record.

Special attention is paid to periods of work in territories that are currently not under the control of Ukraine, or in countries that were part of the former Soviet Union. According to current legislation, service time earned in aggressor countries is no longer taken into account when calculating pensions. This applies to periods of work after the collapse of the USSR, provided that no relevant international agreements have been concluded between the states.

It is also important to remember that to be eligible for an old-age pension today, one must have a sufficient amount of insurance service. If a person lacks years of service due to the absence of supporting documents for the Soviet period, they can voluntarily pay insurance contributions. This allows them to "buy" the necessary months of service to receive pension payments in the future.

Therefore, citizens should check their documents and the status of their pension account on the Pension Fund's electronic services portal in advance. In case of questions regarding the confirmation of service time, experts advise contacting the territorial offices of the Fund to receive consultation and resolve document issues before reaching retirement age.
