Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine: Why We Honor Heroes on August 29
Every year on August 29, Ukraine marks the Day of Remembrance for defenders who died in the struggle for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of our state. This date is important for every Ukrainian, as it serves as a reminder of the high price of our freedom and the courage of those who gave their lives for the country's future.
This day was not chosen by chance. It is dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who perished during the Ilovaisk tragedy in 2014. At that time, while withdrawing from encirclement, Ukrainian military personnel came under enemy fire, which led to heavy losses among our defenders.
The sunflower has become the symbol of this day. This is linked to the events of 2014: as Ukrainian fighters were leaving Ilovaisk, they passed through fields of blooming sunflowers. Today, these flowers remind us of the fallen heroes and that the memory of their feat will live forever.
On this day, commemorative events are held throughout Ukraine. People honor the heroes with a moment of silence, lay flowers at memorials, and remember those who defended their native land until their last breath. It is a time for unity, gratitude, and deep respect for everyone who stood up to defend Ukraine.
