Ukrainian metallurgy under threat: steel production may come to a halt
The Ukrainian metallurgical industry has found itself in a critical situation due to the consequences of the war. According to the latest data, steel smelting volumes in the country fell to 277,000 tons in August. This is 57.3% less than in the same period last year.
Experts warn that the situation continues to deteriorate. There is a real risk that steel production could drop to zero as early as October. The main reasons for this decline are logistical difficulties, the destruction of infrastructure, and problems with the energy supply to enterprises.
Metallurgy is one of the key industries for Ukraine's economy, so the shutdown of plants could lead to the loss of billions of hryvnias in revenue. This will also negatively affect the state's export potential and the level of employment in industrial regions.
To save the industry, experts propose creating a special Mining and Metals Complex (MMC) Recovery Fund. Such an initiative is intended to help enterprises overcome the crisis, restore production capacities, and preserve jobs under martial law.
