New Rules for Sick Leave in Ukraine: What Changes from April 1
Starting April 1, updated rules for the issuance and payment of sick leave benefits come into effect in Ukraine. These changes are part of a major reform of the social insurance system. The main goal of the innovations is to make the process of receiving financial assistance simpler and more transparent for both employees and employers.
A sick leave certificate is an official document confirming that a person is temporarily unable to work due to their health condition. It allows an employee to legally stay home for treatment while retaining part of their income. In Ukraine, this system is an important part of the social protection of citizens.
According to current legislation, the first five days of illness are usually paid by the employer. Starting from the sixth day, payments are made through the funds of the Pension Fund of Ukraine. The amount of such assistance directly depends on the employee's insurance record: the longer a person has worked and paid taxes, the higher the percentage of their salary they will receive during their illness.
An important part of the changes is the further digitalization of the system. Electronic sick leaves have already become common practice, but now the data exchange process between hospitals and the Pension Fund will become even faster. This avoids unnecessary paperwork and reduces the risk of errors that could have caused payment delays in the past.
Experts note that such updates will help ensure the stability of social payments even in difficult conditions. Citizens are recommended to monitor the status of their electronic sick leaves in their personal accounts on the Pension Fund's electronic services portal. This will help them receive information about the accrual of funds in a timely manner.
Overall, the new system is aimed at protecting the rights of working Ukrainians. Thanks to the automation of processes, the state is trying to make the social insurance system more reliable and convenient for every citizen.
