Ministry of Health: nearly 40% of hospitalizations in Ukraine are unjustified

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has released new data regarding the operation of medical facilities. According to the department's analysis, a significant portion of hospitalizations in the country has no medical basis. Experts have calculated that approximately 38% of patients are admitted to hospitals without a real need for inpatient treatment.

The most significant issues were identified in general therapy departments. The percentage of "unnecessary" hospitalizations there is particularly high. This means that many patients could have received the necessary care on an outpatient basis—that is, at home or during visits to a family doctor—without occupying hospital beds.

Such a situation creates additional strain on the medical system. When hospitals are overcrowded with people who do not require round-the-clock supervision, the resources of medical facilities are used inefficiently. This limits access to care for those who are truly in critical condition and require urgent hospitalization.

The Ministry plans to review approaches to referring patients for inpatient treatment. The goal of the reform is to make the system more efficient and to focus doctors' attention on cases where hospitalization is truly necessary to save lives or restore health.

Currently, the Ministry of Health is urging doctors and patients to be more responsible regarding the hospitalization process. It is expected that optimizing these processes will help improve the quality of medical services and ensure the rational use of budget funds allocated for healthcare.
