Ukraine seeks new locomotives in Europe due to Russian shelling
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have been continuously striking Ukraine's critical infrastructure. The railway, which is the main method of transporting cargo and passengers in the country, has suffered particularly severe damage. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, more than 500 locomotives have been damaged or completely destroyed due to constant attacks.
The situation remains difficult, as the number of damaged pieces of equipment continues to grow. In 2026 alone, enemy shelling disabled 310 locomotives. This creates serious logistical challenges, as the railway plays a key role in the country's economy and defense capabilities.
To address this problem, the Ukrainian government and the management of Ukrzaliznytsia have begun negotiations with European partners. Ukraine plans to purchase or lease locomotives from European Union countries. This will help support the operation of rail services and ensure stable transport of goods that are critically important for the country.
Currently, specialists are working to adapt European equipment to Ukrainian railway standards. It is expected that cooperation with international partners will allow for partially compensating for the losses and avoiding a halt in freight transport, which is vital for the Ukrainian economy under wartime conditions.
