NABU proposes changing bail rules to combat corruption
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has launched an initiative to amend legislation regarding the procedure for posting bail in criminal cases. According to representatives of the agency, the current system has significant flaws that allow suspects in corruption cases to avoid real punishment and continue their illegal activities.
As an example, NABU cited the "Midas" case. Investigators note that in such instances, bail often turns into a kind of "element of the criminal economy." Instead of serving as a guarantee for the fulfillment of procedural obligations, large sums of money become a tool that allows defendants to remain at liberty and influence the course of the investigation.
In the opinion of the anti-corruption officials, the current rules require revision, as they do not always correspond to the severity of the crimes. Often, bail amounts are insufficient to stop corruption schemes. The agency emphasizes that the state must ensure mechanisms that make it impossible to use financial resources to avoid accountability.
NABU calls on lawmakers to join the discussion and introduce relevant amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code. According to experts, this will help make the judicial process more fair and effective in the fight against high-level corruption in Ukraine.
Currently, the bureau's proposals are at the discussion stage. It is expected that the issue will be submitted for consideration by the relevant committees of the Verkhovna Rada in the near future for further analysis and decision-making.
