Experts call for restricting scrap metal exports to develop Ukrainian industry
Ukrainian industrialists and experts from ICC Ukraine emphasize the importance of revising state policy regarding the export of scrap metal. In their view, the country should focus on processing raw materials domestically instead of selling them abroad. This would allow Ukrainian enterprises to create their own products with high added value.
Currently, a significant portion of scrap metal is exported from Ukraine to other countries. Afterward, Ukrainian companies are forced to purchase finished metal products at higher prices. Experts consider this economic model inefficient, as it deprives domestic industry of the resources necessary for recovery and development.
Developing domestic metal processing could be an important step toward strengthening Ukraine's economy. This would create new jobs, increase tax revenues for the budget, and reduce dependence on imported goods. This is especially relevant under martial law, when supporting domestic producers is critically important.
Discussions regarding export restrictions are currently ongoing at the level of government structures and business associations. Industrialists are calling on the authorities to implement effective mechanisms that will incentivize the use of scrap metal specifically at Ukrainian plants. This will help ensure the stable operation of the metallurgical sector and support the national economy during difficult times.
