A new medicine verification system is being introduced in Ukraine: what patients should know
The implementation of a national medicine verification system is beginning in Ukraine. This is an important step toward protecting consumers from counterfeit or substandard medications. The new initiative will help make the pharmaceutical market more transparent and safer for every citizen.
The core idea of the system is the use of a special 2D code on every medicine package. This code contains a unique identifier that allows the drug's journey to be tracked from the manufacturer to the pharmacy shelf. Thanks to this, patients will be able to be confident that they are purchasing an authentic and safe product.
To verify medicines, buyers will not need any special equipment. It is planned that it will be possible to check the authenticity of a drug using a regular smartphone and a special mobile application. If the code on the package does not match the data in the database, the system will immediately report a potential issue.
These changes bring Ukrainian legislation closer to European Union standards. The implementation of such a system is part of a general strategy to modernize the medical sector in Ukraine. This will help increase public trust in pharmacy chains and improve quality control for goods sold in the country.
Currently, the government is working on the technical details of launching the system. It is expected that the full transition to the new labeling standards will take place gradually. This is an important reform that will help make the healthcare system more modern and reliable for all Ukrainians.
