Why Starlink will not replace home internet in apartments: Ministry of Digital Transformation explains
The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine has provided clarification regarding the use of Starlink satellite communications in urban environments. Many Ukrainians are considering this option as an alternative to home internet, especially during power outages; however, experts emphasize the technical limitations of such a solution.
According to ministry representatives, Starlink satellite systems are not intended to fully replace stationary internet in apartment buildings. The main problem lies in the specifics of how the equipment operates, as it requires direct access to the open sky. In dense urban areas, apartment windows or balconies often do not provide the necessary field of view for a stable signal.
Furthermore, the efficiency of a satellite terminal depends on the number of users in a specific area. If many terminals are connected simultaneously in one building or neighboring apartments, it can lead to network congestion and a significant decrease in data transmission speeds for all users in that zone.
Experts advise Ukrainians to look into alternative ways of ensuring connectivity, such as xPON technology, which allows for internet access even during prolonged power outages, provided the provider has the appropriate equipment. Starlink remains an effective solution for field conditions, remote areas, or critical infrastructure facilities where it is not possible to install wired internet.
