Crisis in the agricultural sector: how the port blockade is affecting sunflower prices
Ukrainian farmers find themselves in a difficult situation due to problems with the export of agricultural products. The blockade of Odesa ports has significantly limited the opportunities for shipping goods abroad, which is negatively impacting the entire market.
Against the backdrop of these restrictions, the price of sunflower in Ukraine has fallen to 19,000 hryvnias per ton. The situation is complicated by the fact that the 2026 sunflower harvest was a record one. A large volume of produce on the domestic market, combined with limited exports, has led to a sharp decline in purchase prices.
Due to this pricing policy, many farmers are recording losses. The costs of growing and storing the harvest often exceed the income that farmers receive from selling the raw materials. This threatens the financial stability of many farms that depend on export revenues.
Experts note that unblocking the ports is critically important for the recovery of the agricultural sector. As long as logistics routes remain closed, domestic market prices will continue to remain low, forcing producers to seek new ways to sell their products.
