Ukraine's Foreign Ministry Reacts to European Parliament Decision on Reforms and Historical Issues
The European Parliament recently adopted an important report on reforms and support for Ukraine. This document assesses our country's progress on the path to European Union membership. At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ukraine drew attention to certain details in this resolution that sparked discussions.
During the preparation of the report, Polish MEPs proposed amendments regarding the activities of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Historical issues between Ukraine and Poland are often complex, and this time they appeared in an official document dedicated to modern political and economic changes.
Ukraine's MFA officially called these Polish amendments regarding the UPA "inappropriate." The ministry believes that historical issues should not become part of political resolutions on reforms. According to Ukrainian diplomats, such topics should be discussed by historians, not politicians within European institutions.
Despite the disputes surrounding historical points, the European Parliament's report is overall positive for Ukraine. It confirms Europe's strong support for Ukrainian sovereignty. The document also recognizes Ukraine's success in implementing important internal changes, even under the conditions of a full-scale war.
Ukraine continues its path toward the European Union, fulfilling the necessary conditions for accession. Although discussions with neighbors regarding the past occasionally arise, international cooperation and collective security remain the state's top priority. Dialogue between countries should be based on mutual respect and focus on a shared future within the European family.
