President Zelenskyy explains the conditions for holding elections in Ukraine
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the possibility of holding presidential elections in the country in an interview with the British TV channel Sky News. The head of state emphasized that this issue remains relevant, but its implementation depends on the security situation and legislative changes.
According to the president, the main obstacle to voting is active combat operations. Zelenskyy stressed that in order to hold fair and transparent elections, it is necessary to ensure the safety of all citizens, including military personnel on the front lines and refugees currently abroad. At the moment, it is impossible to organize such a process in full.
Furthermore, the president noted that elections require appropriate changes to legislation and significant funding. He added that Ukraine is ready to discuss this issue with partners, but the priority remains protecting sovereignty and ending the war on fair terms.
Currently, martial law is in effect in Ukraine, which imposes restrictions on conducting any electoral processes. The Constitution of Ukraine and relevant laws prohibit organizing elections until the special legal regime is lifted.
In conclusion, Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured that Ukraine remains committed to democratic principles. However, holding elections will only be possible when security in the country is guaranteed for every voter.
