Why Ukraine cannot fully import electricity from Europe

Ukraine continues to face challenges in the energy sector due to the consequences of Russian attacks on infrastructure. One of the key ways to stabilize the power system is by importing electricity from European Union countries. However, experts note that there are certain economic obstacles that prevent this resource from being used to its full capacity.

The main problem remains the so-called "price caps" — price limits on electricity established in the domestic market of Ukraine. When the price in European markets exceeds these limits, Ukrainian companies cannot purchase imported power because it becomes unprofitable for them. As a result, the power system does not receive the necessary volumes of assistance during peak load hours.

Experts emphasize that market mechanisms must be more flexible under wartime conditions. Abolishing or revising price caps would allow Ukrainian suppliers to purchase more energy from neighboring countries, such as Slovakia, Hungary, or Poland. This would help avoid prolonged power outages for consumers and support the operation of industrial enterprises.

Currently, the government and energy regulators are looking for ways to resolve this situation. It is important to find a balance between the affordability of electricity for the population and economic feasibility for importing companies. The stability of the power system determines not only the comfort of Ukrainians but also the operation of critical infrastructure and the country's economy as a whole.
