Ukraine honors the memory of fallen defenders
On August 29, Ukraine marks the Day of Remembrance for defenders who died in the struggle for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of our state. This date was not chosen by chance: it was on this day in 2014, during the withdrawal from the encirclement near Ilovaisk, that the largest number of Ukrainian soldiers perished during the entire war in the Donbas.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the citizens to honor the memory of all who gave their lives for the sake of the country's future. The head of state emphasized that every fallen hero is a part of the history of the Ukrainian people's resilience. He stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the feats of the soldiers who stood up to defend their land from Russian aggression.
Commemorative events are taking place across the country today. People are bringing flowers to memorials, monuments, and the burial sites of the heroes. At 9 a.m., a nationwide minute of silence was held in Ukraine to honor the memory of all who have died in this brutal war.
This day serves as a reminder to every Ukrainian of the high price of our freedom. Despite the pain of loss, Ukrainian society continues to unite in support of the army and the fight for victory, remembering those who will never return home.
