How Ukrainian universities will operate during potential blackouts
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has developed new operating rules for higher education institutions in the event of prolonged power outages. Due to potential winter blackouts, universities have been granted the right to independently choose the learning mode that best suits the security and energy situation in their region.
In total, five levels of operation are provided: green, yellow, orange, red, and black. Each of them determines whether students will attend lectures in person or switch to a remote format. The choice of mode will depend on the availability of electricity, heating, and the ability to ensure a stable internet connection in academic buildings.
The green level signifies stable operation in the usual mode, while the black level implies a complete suspension of the educational process due to critical circumstances. Universities will be able to change these modes promptly, depending on daily outage schedules and the state of the energy system in a specific city.
University management emphasizes that the safety of students and teachers remains the top priority. In the event of a transition to remote learning, universities are obliged to ensure access to online platforms so that the educational process is not interrupted for a long time.
This approach will allow Ukrainian educational institutions to be more flexible in the face of energy challenges. Students are advised to monitor official announcements on their university websites to stay informed about schedule changes in a timely manner.
