A historic struggle for cultural heritage: how Ukraine tried to reclaim its treasures in 1918

The issue of returning cultural property that was removed from Ukraine has remained relevant for many decades. Back in 1918, during complex negotiations with the Bolsheviks, the Ukrainian side actively demanded the return of its national artifacts that had ended up in the hands of the Russian Empire.

The Ukrainian delegation set an ambitious goal for itself. In addition to the return of unique items, such as the regalia of Hetman Ivan Mazepa and Scythian gold, Ukraine laid claim to one-fifth of the entire cultural heritage of the former empire. This was important for restoring historical justice and the national identity of the young state.

The Bolshevik leadership at the time made promises regarding the return of looted valuables, yet real steps in this direction were limited. The political instability and military actions of that era hindered the full implementation of these agreements, and therefore, most of the artifacts never returned home.

Today, the history of a century ago once again reminds us of the importance of protecting cultural property. The struggle for the return of Ukrainian treasures continues to this day, as the preservation of national heritage is a key element of the sovereignty and culture of every country.
