Ukraine's economy at risk due to the shutdown of metallurgical enterprises
Ukraine could lose more than 7% of its gross domestic product due to the shutdown of large metallurgical plants. This is reported by The New York Times, which is analyzing the current state of the country's industrial sector amid the war.
One of the key examples cited in the report is the operations of the Metinvest company. Due to constant shelling, infrastructure destruction, and logistics problems, enterprises in the industry are forced to cut production or stop operations entirely. This negatively affects not only the companies' profits but also the state's overall economic indicators.
An additional factor complicating the situation is the drop in freight volumes through the Odesa ports. Metallurgical products have traditionally been one of the main items of Ukrainian exports, so the restriction of sea routes and difficulties with exporting finished steel significantly reduce foreign currency inflows to the budget.
Experts note that metallurgy remains an important pillar of the Ukrainian economy. The loss of production capacity creates serious challenges for the stability of the financial system and the country's recovery. The government and businesses continue to look for ways to optimize logistics routes and support the operation of enterprises in safer regions.
