Steel and pig iron production in Ukraine has decreased significantly
The Ukrainian metallurgical industry has faced serious challenges in recent times. According to the latest data, in the first nine months of 2026, the production volumes of pig iron, steel, and rolled products in the country decreased by 20–23% compared to the same period last year.
The situation worsened significantly in September. Statistics show that the output of metallurgical products for this month fell by half compared to August. When compared to the figures from September of last year, the drop in steel production became even more noticeable — it decreased by almost five times.
Experts attribute these low figures to a number of factors affecting the operation of enterprises. Among the main reasons are the difficult security situation, logistical difficulties, and limited access to energy resources necessary for the full operation of the plants.
Metallurgy is traditionally one of the key sectors of the Ukrainian economy, so such changes have a noticeable impact on overall industrial production indicators. Currently, industry representatives continue to look for ways to stabilize operations under wartime conditions.
Future developments in the metallurgical sector will depend on the stability of energy supplies and the possibilities for product exports. The government and businesses continue to work on supporting the operation of strategically important enterprises during this difficult period.
