Changes in hospital funding: how surgical departments will operate from July 1

The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) is introducing new requirements for the operation of medical facilities. Starting July 1, state funding for surgical departments will depend on the number of surgeries performed. This decision applies to hospitals across the country, including those in the regions.

According to the new rules, the NHSU will stop allocating funds for surgery to departments that perform fewer than 600 complex operations per year. This initiative is aimed at improving the quality of medical services and concentrating the professional experience of doctors in larger centers.

One of the first examples of the consequences of this reform is the surgical department in Domanivka. Because the number of operations in this facility does not reach the established minimum, it will no longer receive state funding under the relevant service package.

Local authorities and hospital administrations are now looking for ways to adapt to the new conditions. The main goal of the changes is to ensure that patients have access to qualified care, as doctors who perform more surgeries have a higher level of professional skill.

Patients in need of elective surgical interventions are advised to check information about the operation of departments at their local hospitals. The reform of the medical system in Ukraine is ongoing, and such steps are part of a strategy to optimize the network of medical facilities.
