National Health Service changes funding rules for surgical departments
Starting July 1, new requirements for the operation of medical facilities will come into effect in Ukraine. The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) is ceasing funding for surgical departments that perform fewer than 600 major surgeries per year.
This decision will directly affect the operation of hospitals in small towns. In particular, the surgical department in Domanivka is subject to funding cuts. Local medical facilities that do not meet the new criteria regarding the number of surgeries performed will no longer receive funds under the corresponding service package from the state.
Representatives of the NHSU explain that such changes are necessary to improve the quality of medical services. According to them, a high volume of surgeries guarantees a higher level of physician professionalism and better treatment outcomes for patients. However, this presents local authorities with a difficult task regarding the reorganization of medical care in their communities.
Currently, hospital management and local authorities must decide how to ensure residents' access to surgical care under the new conditions. It is expected that patients from such regions will be referred to larger medical centers where a sufficient number of surgeries are performed to qualify for state funding.
