Ukraine calls on ICAO to ban flights over Russian territory due to safety risks
Ukraine has officially appealed to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ban flights over the territory of the Russian Federation. Kyiv emphasizes that the use of Russian airspace currently poses a serious threat to the safety of passenger aircraft and civilians.
In its appeal, the Ukrainian side stressed that due to the ongoing war and active hostilities, the Russian aviation system is unable to guarantee flight safety. The risks are associated both with the technical condition of aircraft affected by sanctions and with the unpredictable operation of air defense systems in the conflict zone.
Representatives of Ukraine note that international airlines that continue to fly over Russia are putting passengers in danger. This issue has been discussed repeatedly at the international level, as flight safety is the top priority for the global aviation community.
ICAO is currently reviewing the evidence and arguments provided by Ukraine. The organization is expected to conduct a thorough analysis of the situation in order to make a decision that will help avoid potential tragedies in the future.
This appeal is part of a broader strategy by Ukraine aimed at increasing international pressure on Russia. Further steps by ICAO could significantly impact international air travel and the safety of civil aviation in the region.
