Changes in hospital funding: what awaits surgical departments in Ukraine
The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) is introducing new requirements for medical institutions. Starting July 1, 2024, state funding for surgical departments will depend on the number of surgeries performed. Hospitals that conduct fewer than 600 complex surgical interventions per year will no longer receive state funding for this area.
These changes affect many regional medical facilities. In particular, it has become known that the surgical department in Domanivka does not meet the new criteria. Since the number of operations there is below the established limit, the NHSU will stop funding this unit.
The main goal of these innovations is to improve the quality of medical services. The Ministry of Health believes that doctors must practice constantly in order to perform complex surgeries safely and effectively. Concentrating patients in larger centers should help achieve better treatment outcomes.
For patients, this means they will need to seek care at other hospitals that meet the new requirements. Local authorities and the management of medical facilities will have to reconsider the organization of work to ensure residents have access to the necessary surgical care at other institutions.
