Russia holds 'elections' in occupied territories: reaction from Ukraine and the world
The Russian Federation has begun holding so-called 'presidential elections' in its own territories, as well as in the temporarily occupied lands of Ukraine. This process is taking place in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, as well as in Crimea. The Ukrainian government has officially stated that these actions are illegal and violate the norms of international law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has called on the international community not to recognize the results of this voting. According to Ukrainian diplomats, holding elections in occupied territories is an attempt to legitimize Russian aggression. Many countries around the world have already supported Kyiv's position, emphasizing that voting under martial law and under pressure from the occupation administration cannot be considered free or fair.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian defense forces continue to defend democratic values and the independence of the state on the front lines. Despite the difficult security situation, Ukraine remains committed to the principles of democracy and the rule of law. Citizens of Ukraine who are in the occupied territories are facing pressure, as the occupiers are trying to force them to participate in the voting.
International observers and human rights organizations are also expressing concern over the lack of transparency during the electoral process in Russia. They point out that opposition candidates were not allowed to participate in the elections, and the media is under complete state control.
The situation remains tense, as these events are taking place against the backdrop of an ongoing full-scale war. Ukraine continues to cooperate with international partners to ensure the non-recognition of the results of these 'elections' on a global level and to increase pressure on the aggressor.
