UK Health Regulator Clarifies Rules for AI Medical Scribes

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently provided new guidance regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare settings. The regulator has clarified how it classifies AI tools that act as 'scribes' during doctor-patient consultations.

Many doctors and clinics in the United Kingdom are starting to use AI software to listen to appointments. These programs automatically transcribe conversations and create summaries for medical records. This technology is designed to save time for healthcare professionals, allowing them to focus more on their patients rather than typing notes.

According to the MHRA, most of these common AI scribe applications are not considered 'medical devices.' This means that they do not need to follow the strict safety and performance regulations required for tools that diagnose or treat illnesses. The regulator believes these tools are primarily for administrative support rather than clinical decision-making.

However, the MHRA warned that if an AI tool starts to provide medical advice or suggests specific treatments, the classification could change. In such cases, the software would be treated as a medical device and would need to meet much higher safety standards to protect patients.

This decision is an important step for the NHS and private clinics as they look to adopt new technologies. By clarifying these rules, the government hopes to encourage innovation while ensuring that patient data remains secure and that the primary responsibility for medical care stays with human doctors.
