UK Regulator Launches Investigation into TikTok Over Child Safety
Ofcom, the official regulator for communications in the United Kingdom, has officially launched an investigation into the popular video-sharing app TikTok. The inquiry focuses on whether the company is doing enough to protect children from harmful content while using the platform.
This investigation follows concerns from parents and child safety experts regarding the type of material young users can access. Ofcom is specifically looking at TikTok’s age verification systems and the methods the app uses to restrict children from seeing inappropriate videos or interacting with strangers.
Under the UK’s Online Safety Act, technology companies have a legal responsibility to ensure their platforms are safe for younger users. If Ofcom finds that TikTok has failed to meet these strict safety standards, the company could face significant fines or be forced to change how its algorithm works for minors.
A spokesperson for TikTok stated that the company is cooperating fully with the regulator. They noted that they already have several safety features in place, such as restricted accounts for users under the age of 16 and tools for parents to manage their children's screen time.
Ofcom has confirmed that it will publish the results of its investigation once the process is complete. This case is seen as an important test for the UK's new digital regulations, as the government continues to put pressure on social media giants to prioritize the well-being of young people online.
