UK Health Officials Warn of Cyclospora Cases Linked to Mexico Travel

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning following a significant increase in cases of cyclospora among travellers returning to the United Kingdom from Mexico. Cyclospora is an intestinal infection caused by a microscopic parasite, which is typically spread through contaminated food or water.

Health officials are advising British citizens who are planning trips to Mexico to be extra careful about what they consume. The infection is often linked to eating fresh produce, such as soft fruits and salad vegetables, that may have been washed in contaminated water. It can also be contracted by drinking untreated water or using ice made from it.

Symptoms of a cyclospora infection usually include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, bloating, and fatigue. While most people recover with appropriate medical treatment, the UKHSA stresses the importance of seeking advice from a GP or a travel clinic if these symptoms develop after returning home from abroad.

To reduce the risk of infection, travellers are encouraged to follow strict food and water hygiene practices. This includes choosing freshly cooked food that is served steaming hot, peeling fruits yourself, and drinking only bottled or boiled water. Avoiding ice in drinks is also a recommended precaution while visiting areas where the parasite is known to be present.

The UKHSA continues to monitor the situation closely and is working with international partners to understand the source of the outbreak. Travellers are urged to stay informed about health risks in their destination countries to ensure a safe and healthy trip.
