Experts Warn of Growing Risks from Unregulated Online Drugs in the UK
A leading medical expert has warned that the United Kingdom is becoming a "wild west" for the sale of experimental drugs. Professor Channa Jayasena, a specialist in reproductive endocrinology, expressed serious concerns regarding the rise of unregulated substances known as peptides being sold online.
Peptides are chains of amino acids that are sometimes used for medical purposes, but they are also increasingly marketed online for bodybuilding, weight loss, or anti-aging. Because these products are often sold through unregulated websites, they do not undergo the strict safety checks required for licensed medicines.
Professor Jayasena highlighted that the current system is failing to protect the public. He noted that responsibility for monitoring these sales is currently falling between different government regulators, leaving a gap in enforcement. This lack of oversight makes it difficult to track who is selling these substances and where they are coming from.
Health professionals are worried that these products could lead to serious health complications or even fatalities. Many consumers purchase these drugs without fully understanding the risks, as the online descriptions often promise benefits without mentioning potential side effects or long-term dangers.
As the popularity of these experimental substances grows, experts are calling for clearer regulations to ensure consumer safety. Until new rules are put in place, health authorities are urging the public to be extremely cautious and to avoid purchasing any medication or health supplement from unverified online sources.
