Nationalist leaders sign pact & more today
The leaders of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru (the Party of Wales), and Sinn Féin (the Irish republican party in Northern Ireland) have signed a formal pact to coordinate efforts to secure independence referendums for their respective nations. This agreement marks the first time that the governments of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are all led by parties committed to leaving the United Kingdom. Scottish First Minister John Swinney has stated his ambition to hold a second Scottish independence referendum by 2031, with the coalition asserting that Westminster should no longer have the authority to block these democratic processes.
In other developments, the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is partnering with the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in the United States to link high-powered supercomputers. This initiative aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy by connecting the UK's SUNRISE system with the US-based STELLAR-AI, potentially impacting long-term energy research and infrastructure.
