Starmer resigns as PM & Burnham faces £4.7bn gap
The UK is preparing for a new Prime Minister following the resignation of Keir Starmer amid pressure from his own lawmakers. Andy Burnham is widely expected to succeed him, though he faces an immediate challenge to fill a £4.7 billion ($6.2 billion) gap in the national defense budget.
While Burnham has vowed to fully fund the country's defense plans, the political transition has drawn criticism from US Vice President JD Vance, who stated that Britain has been "failed by its leadership for a long time."
The shift in leadership coincides with growing concerns over the future of the United Kingdom itself. Leaders in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have begun contingency planning for the potential breakup of the UK if the Reform UK party continues its rise. Party leader Nigel Farage has proposed withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights—the international treaty that protects civil liberties—and renegotiating the Good Friday Agreement, which is the 1998 peace deal that maintains stability in Northern Ireland.
Mr Farage has also been referred to a standards watchdog this week. The investigation follows a report of undeclared benefits, even as his party continues to lead in some national opinion polls.
