Rhone American Cemetery to Honor 82nd Anniversary of Operation Dragoon
The American Battle Monuments Commission has announced that the Rhone American Cemetery will host a special ceremony to mark the 82nd anniversary of Operation Dragoon. This historic military operation, which took place in August 1944, was a key moment during World War II that helped lead to the liberation of southern France from Nazi occupation.
The ceremony serves as a tribute to the thousands of American soldiers who fought and lost their lives during the mission. Operation Dragoon began with amphibious landings along the French Riviera, quickly pushing inland to secure vital territory. The success of this operation allowed Allied forces to move north and connect with troops who had landed in Normandy earlier that summer.
Today, the Rhone American Cemetery in Draguignan, France, serves as the final resting place for over 800 American service members. The upcoming event will include speeches, wreath-laying ceremonies, and moments of silence to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who served. It remains an important site for U.S. families and history enthusiasts to connect with the legacy of the conflict.
Events like this remind the public of the long-standing partnership between the United States and France. By remembering the events of 1944, the commission hopes to ensure that future generations understand the cost of freedom and the importance of international cooperation during times of crisis.
The anniversary ceremony is open to the public and will be attended by government officials, military representatives, and local citizens. For those unable to attend in person, the American Battle Monuments Commission provides educational resources and digital archives online to help people learn more about the history of Operation Dragoon.
