The Left Party demands swift action against the new AfD youth group
The Left Party in the German Bundestag urged security authorities to take immediate action against the new youth organization of the AfD party, warning that many members have "close ties to organizations and individuals classified as far-right extremists."
Parliamentary deputy and vice-chair of the faction, Klara Biunger, told AFP that the classification of the youth wing as a far-right organization by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution should be straightforward. She warned against delays in taking action, emphasizing the immediate danger the group poses to democracy.
The new youth organization, Generation Germany, was founded in Gießen on Saturday amid widespread protests. It replaces the previous AfD youth group, Junge Alternative, which was classified as a far-right organization confirmed by the same federal office before it was dissolved earlier this year.
In May, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) reclassified the AfD party at the federal level as a confirmed far-right party. However, since the AfD has filed a lawsuit against this classification, the office has temporarily suspended its implementation until a legal decision is made.
Currently, the AfD party is treated as a suspected far-right organization. In East Germany, four regional associations of the party have already been classified as confirmed far-right by the constitutional protection offices in the relevant states, raising ongoing concerns among political and security authorities.
