Drama of bank safe deposit box theft in Gelsenkirchen: Without this proof, customers will not receive a single cent.

A dramatic bank raid shook the city of Gelsenkirchen, leaving customers in a state of shock and fear after criminals broke into most of the safety deposit boxes. Hundreds of people gathered outside the branch seeking answers, while the police secured the site and assessed the extent of the significant losses.

During the Christmas holiday, unknown thieves entered the Sparkasse branch in the Gelsenkirchen-Buer area through the underground parking garage. Using specialized drilling equipment, they managed to open about 95 percent of the safety deposit boxes before fleeing the scene, and it is believed they used an Audi car.

The incident led to a state of chaos among the customers, as about 200 people gathered in front of the bank, some crying and others screaming in panic, while the police tried to restore order. Many feared losing decades of savings in money, jewelry, cash, and personal documents that were stored in the safes.

Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen confirmed that each safe deposit box is primarily insured for an amount of up to €10,300. However, experts warned that this amount often does not cover the true value of the contents, especially if they include gold, jewelry, or large sums of cash, unless customers have obtained additional insurance or coverage through home contents insurance.

The biggest problem now lies in the issue of proof, as banks do not know what is inside safety deposit boxes, placing the burden of proving ownership and value entirely on the clients. Without inventories, photos, purchase receipts, or expert appraisals stored elsewhere, claims for compensation may be denied or reduced to the replacement value only.

Access to the affected vault area remains closed due to structural damage. Sparkasse reported that it will contact affected customers by mail, but assessing the full extent of the losses may take weeks. Banking experts confirm that this incident shows that safe deposit boxes are not risk-free, and real protection is limited to those who took prior precautions in terms of insurance and documentation.
