Austrian States Brace for Heavy Snow and Icy Conditions

A low-pressure system over northern Italy will bring snow, rain, and colder air to parts of Germany and Austria this weekend. Authorities have issued weather warnings as the snow line drops from around 1,000 meters to valley levels in some regions.

On Saturday, dense clouds will dominate much of Austria, with isolated sunshine in the east. Rain will spread from the west, turning to snow by late evening in the Danube region and eastern lowlands. High temperatures will range from 2 to 9 degrees Celsius, while parts of Salzburg, Upper Austria, and Lower Austria face heavy snowfall warnings, and Burgenland experiences strong winds.

Sunday will begin with lingering clouds and occasional snow along the northern Alps. The Salzkammergut and Mariazellerland regions are expected to remain overcast for much of the day, while the south sees occasional sunshine. Temperatures will remain low, with highs only between -4 and +1 degrees Celsius, and a strong northerly foehn wind in southern areas.

Monday will bring mixed rain and snow, particularly in Vorarlberg and Upper Austria. Freezing rain may create icy conditions, while showers and thunderstorms spread across Upper Styria. Winds will remain light to moderate, and maximum temperatures will range from 3 to 7 degrees Celsius.

By Tuesday, dense clouds and repeated snow or rain showers are expected, with a snow line dropping to 500–600 meters. Sleet may occur at lower elevations, and several centimeters of fresh snow are forecast along the northern Alps. Strong winds from the west to northeast will make conditions feel colder, with highs between -1 and 7 degrees Celsius.
