Arrest of a man in Amsterdam after finding 1,200 kg of cocaine in a shipment of bananas coming from Colombia
Dutch authorities seized 1,200 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas from Colombia at the port of Vlissingen, leading to the arrest of a 43-year-old man from Amsterdam, according to the Public Prosecution Service (OM).
Customs officials discovered cocaine on Friday, August 8, during an inspection at the port. The drugs were hidden among boxes of bananas and were secured and later destroyed by the customs support team (TBB).
This seizure led to an investigation by the Zeehavenpolitie (Port Police) of the Zeeland-West Brabant unit. On Tuesday, August 12, a special police team arrested the suspect who was in possession of 19,000 euros in cash. The police also seized a vehicle belonging to a company associated with him.
During the search of the man's home in Amsterdam under the supervision of an investigating judge, authorities seized digital devices containing data and one kilogram of cannabis. Later that same day, investigators searched two additional business premises related to the case.
The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before a judge for questioning later this week, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM).
