Today's News: De la Espriella wins the presidency of Colombia
Colombia elected a new president during a high-tension day that is generating immediate reactions in Venezuelan politics. Meanwhile, experts warn about the persistent fragility of the national economy, and the government issues institutional messages for Father's Day.
Abelardo de la Espriella, leader of the right-wing movement Defensores de la Patria, prevailed this Sunday, June 21, in Colombia's presidential runoff. The victory has been recognized by five former Colombian presidents, although Senator Gustavo Petro's faction has questioned the preliminary results. In Venezuela, opposition leader María Corina Machado congratulated the president-elect, whom she described as a "great ally" for the country, highlighting the importance of this political change in the neighboring nation.
In the economic sphere, economist and director of the firm Ecoanalítica, Pedro Palma, stated that Venezuela's financial situation remains "quite critical." In this context, the possibility of formal dollarization—officially replacing the bolívar with the U.S. dollar—is being debated as a measure to try to curb corruption in public institutions, although analysts clarify that it is not a definitive solution for all of the country's problems.
Finally, on the occasion of Father's Day celebrated this Sunday, Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores sent a public message to Venezuelan families. In their address, they asked for blessings and strength for the country's homes within the framework of this holiday.
