Venezuela and Brazil Agree on Cooperation; Situation of Political Prisoners Denounced
Venezuela and Brazil have established a new roadmap to strengthen their commercial and technological relationship. At the same time, human rights organizations and political leaders are warning about the situation of hundreds of people detained for political reasons in the country and the transfer of prisoners. Additionally, the Caracas Stock Exchange reports historic growth in its financial operations.
The non-governmental organization Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón (JEP) denounced that there are currently 544 people detained for political reasons in Venezuela. The NGO warned about the transfer of prisoners from El Helicoide—an intelligence services headquarters in Caracas used as a detention center—to other locations without informing their relatives. In line with this, opposition leader Williams Dávila presented these complaints in Washington, D.C., to request that international oversight regarding respect for human rights in the country be maintained.
In the diplomatic sphere, the governments of Venezuela and Brazil agreed on a joint work agenda. This agreement seeks to boost economic, scientific, and technological exchange between both nations. The initiative aims to establish clear steps to improve cooperation in strategic sectors for the development of the two neighboring countries.
On the other hand, the Caracas Stock Exchange (BVC) reported that during the month of May, more than 44 billion bolivars were traded. This activity represents an increase of over 400% in equity operations—where company shares are traded—compared to the previous year, which is equivalent to a movement of more than 87 million dollars.
Finally, in the United States, human rights activists demanded the closure of the 'Alligator Alcatraz' detention center. The organizations denounce a lack of transparency regarding the future and whereabouts of migrants who are transferred from these facilities, which affects the legal security of people in the migration process.
