Baltic Sea Drama: Rescuers Withdraw as Lone Whale Fights for Survival
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in the Baltic Sea as a stranded humpback whale freed itself overnight and continued swimming, while rescue boats eventually withdrew, leaving the animal alone as uncertainty over its fate remains.
The whale, later nicknamed “Finn,” had been stuck on a sandbank near Timmendorfer Strand but managed to escape into deeper waters. Throughout the day, multiple boats, including the water police vessel “Seafire,” attempted to guide it toward the open sea and eventually the North Sea, considered vital for its survival.
Rescue teams faced repeated setbacks as the whale swam in unpredictable zigzag patterns, often moving dangerously close to the coastline instead of heading toward open waters. According to Sea Shepherd, the situation remained critical, with another stranding still possible due to the animal’s erratic movements.
Despite hours of effort, rescuers temporarily paused operations, saying the whale needed rest and that forcing it could worsen the situation. Experts also warned of additional dangers, including ghost nets and fishing lines in the Baltic Sea that could entangle the animal and threaten its life.
Marine biologist روبرت مارك ليهمان explained that while the whale showed signs of strength and mobility, it is not yet safe. The animal still has a long journey ahead before reaching the North Sea and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean, its natural habitat.
Local officials, including Mayor سفين بارتهايل بونكه, praised the massive rescue effort but stressed that the situation remains unresolved. Authorities aim to guide the whale toward northern Denmark, where the Baltic meets the North Sea, giving it the best chance of survival.
By evening, the final escort boats returned to port, leaving the whale alone in the water. Officials are now debating whether to resume guidance efforts or allow the animal to navigate on its own, as the dramatic situation in the Baltic Sea continues to unfold.
