Protecting Earth: ESA and JAXA Plan Joint Mission to Asteroid Apophis

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will work more closely together in the future. In Berlin, the heads of both organizations signed a contract on so-called "planetary defense." The goal of this cooperation is to better protect Earth from potential hazards from space.

A central part of the agreement is the Ramses mission to the asteroid Apophis. This celestial body is of particular interest to science because it will fly very close to Earth in 2029. Although there is no danger of impact, the short distance offers a rare opportunity to study the asteroid at close range.

Through this collaboration, ESA and JAXA can combine their technical resources and knowledge. Experts want to understand exactly how asteroids are structured. This knowledge is important for developing strategies to change the trajectory of a dangerous object in an emergency. JAXA contributes its valuable experience from previous asteroid missions to the project.

The contract was officially signed at the Italian Embassy in Berlin. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa emphasized the importance of international partnerships during the ceremony. Together, they want to ensure that humanity is technically prepared should an asteroid ever pose a real threat to our planet.
