Vienna police surround the main train station due to gunfire
The area of Südtiroler Platz near the Hauptbahnhof station in Vienna experienced a state of panic around midnight, as reports of gunfire led to a heavy deployment of Austrian police forces, including special units. The police cordoned off the area extensively, and Gürtel and Südtiroler Platz were closed to traffic.
According to the police, a 46-year-old Austrian man fired several shots from a gas pistol from inside his apartment on Schelleingasse street. The incident resulted in no known injuries or material damage.
The police managed to arrest the man around 1:30 AM, and the circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Office in Vienna.
The authorities explained that their rapid response of this magnitude was due to a previous incident on Friday, when a drunken man fired from his window at a tram, which heightened security alertness.
