Fake workers in the care sector face community service and imprisonment for fraud charges.

A court in Arnhem sentenced three people to community service and imprisonment for working in healthcare without the necessary qualifications, while a fourth person was acquitted. The severity of the sentences reflected the duration of the fraud and whether the defendants acknowledged their responsibility.

The most serious case involved a man from Rensford who held a senior position for four years in a department for the care of individuals with mental disabilities. He was sentenced to six months in prison for giving medications to extremely vulnerable patients who required complex care, which prosecutors described as 'deliberate and long-term deception.'

According to the Public Prosecution Office, these cases have been gathered to highlight an increasing problem of certificate forgery in the healthcare sector. Officials warned that this fraud endangers patient safety and well-being, and undermines public trust in healthcare services.

Previous investigations by health ministry inspectors revealed a recruitment agency that employed more than 60 care workers holding fake certificates or lacking documentation. Authorities reported that some agencies are linked to organized crime and even terrorist organizations, exploiting care jobs as a lucrative source for criminals.

A police report in 2024 indicated that 10 billion euros of the 100 billion euro healthcare budget are lost due to fraud, including millions lost at the hands of criminal gangs. Experts emphasize that care providers must conduct thorough checks on employees to ensure their qualifications, highlighting the weaknesses in the regulatory system.
