Austria reduces humanitarian aid: millions of lives at risk around the world

In Burundi, more than half of the children suffer from malnutrition, while climate disasters and lack of education put their future at risk. Sister Godlieve Miburo, a nun supported by Caritas, is working to change this reality. Through the "Goats Live in Burundi" campaign, she provides support to orphans in terms of housing, healthcare, and education, and helps single or marginalized women. Since 2010, more than 5,000 goats have been delivered to these women – a simple yet effective means that enables them to support themselves.

But this type of aid has now become threatened. Alexander Budman, Vice President of Caritas Austria, warned that Austria is making the largest cuts to humanitarian aid and development assistance compared to other government sectors. While budgets for other sectors are being reduced by 15%, humanitarian aid is being cut by 32%. Budman told the APA news agency: "This is an irresponsible policy and does not look to the future."

Although the Austrian government recently approved 14 million euros from the External Disaster Fund (AKF), Podman emphasized that aid must be planned in advance to be effective. He explained: "If the funds are approved during the year, the aid will be delayed significantly before it reaches those in need."

The consequences of these cuts are severe. In Burundi, international organizations ensure that on-the-ground assistance provides school meals, which are often the only food children receive. Medical care is also very weak. Without ongoing support, millions may be affected. Podman noted that the suspension of U.S. aid alone could lead to the deaths of 14 million people over five years – and now Austria's cuts threaten to expand this disaster.

The impact of these cuts will be felt not only in Burundi but also in crisis areas such as Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan. Vulnerable groups – such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly – are the most affected. Budman stated, "Every cut has a direct impact," warning that immediate aid and long-term projects are threatened today due to a wave of global funding cuts.
