BMW Recalls Nearly 28,600 Cars in Germany Over Fire Risk

BMW is recalling vehicles from several model series worldwide due to a potential fire hazard, affecting 28,582 cars in Germany alone. The Munich-based manufacturer estimates the total number of affected vehicles globally to be in the mid-six-figure range. Previously, kfz-Betrieb reported 575,000 cars, though BMW has not confirmed that figure.

The recall stems from product tests showing that high numbers of engine starts can cause increased wear in the starter solenoid. This may make starting the car difficult or, in extreme cases, prevent it from starting. There is also a risk of a short circuit, which could lead to localized overheating at the starter. BMW warns that, in the worst case, this could result in a vehicle fire while the engine is running, and advises against leaving the car unattended with the engine on.

The recall affects numerous models, including the 2 Series Coupé, several versions of the 3 Series, 4 Series, and 5 Series, the 6 Series Gran Turismo, the 7 Series Sedan, and the X4, X5, X6, and Z4 models. Vehicles with starter relays manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022 are potentially affected. Cars into which a defective starter was retrofitted during repairs may also be included.

This is not BMW’s first starter-related recall due to fire risks. Last autumn, hundreds of thousands of vehicles were recalled because water could penetrate the starter, causing corrosion and short circuits that, in the worst case, could ignite a fire. Unlike the current issue, that risk existed even when the vehicle was switched off.

BMW continues to advise drivers to check whether their car is affected and to follow official guidance for inspection or repair. The company emphasizes that safety remains the top priority and that affected vehicles should not be left unattended while running.
